Shopify Rebellion is back-to-back Game Changers Championship winner
VALORANT stands out as one of the most-played titles among women, with an estimated 30–40% of its player base being female, as mentioned in an article from French media outlet L'Équipe. Aware of this statistic, Riot Games has made a point of creating the Game Changers, a dedicated circuit for women and other marginalized genders. While all VALORANT leagues are technically mixed-gender, the goal of GC is to provide a safe space for those communities within the FPS’ competitive ecosystem. This initiative was the first of this kind for the publisher at the time. But Riot has decided to replicate this initiative in League of Legends starting in 2025
The Game Changers leagues officially debuted in 2021, just a year after VALORANT’s release. The first Game Changers Championship (World Championship) followed in 2022. Since then, the structure of the circuit has evolved, and the number of participants has increased, so that a greater number of teams and regions are represented at the Championship.
While Game Changers offers a dedicated circuit, its players are not confined to it. We’ve seen clear evidence of this when Ava "florescent" Eugene made history by joining Apeks in the VCT EMEA, becoming the first woman to reach VALORANT Tier 1. She has since left the team by mutual agreement, shortly before serious allegations surfaced against her.
Leagues and Formats
The Game Changers system spans several regional circuits, each representing different tiers of play. The VCT Game Changers Championship circuit is the highest one, and is represented by six leagues:
- VCT: Game Changers EMEA
- VCT: Game Changers North America
- VCT: Game Changers Pacific
- VCT: Game Changers Latin America
- VCT: Game Changers Brazil
- VCT: Game Changers China
Not all leagues have the same format, meaning the road to Championship qualification differs by region. The following teams will qualify for the upcoming 2025 Championship, scheduled to be held in Seoul this November:
- EMEA - x3 teams: Stage 3 winner and the two teams with the highest number of points*
- North America - Min. x1 team: Stage 2 winner
- Pacific - x2 teams: 1st and 2nd place from the playoffs
- Latin America - Min. x1 team: Regional Finals winner
- Brazil - Min. x1 team: Stage 2 winner
- China - x1 team: Stage 2 winner
- x1 additional team from Brazil, LATAM, or NA: Winner of the Last Chance Qualifier among the #2 seeds from those three regions
*Points are awarded based on placement in each stage of competition.
The Championship will see the ten teams compete in a double-elimination bracket played in best-of-three matches, with the grand final played in a best-of-five.
Shopify Rebellion’s Supremacy
No discussion of Game Changers can be complete without mentioning Shopify Rebellion. The North American powerhouse has dominated the league for the past two years, breaking records and setting new standards. After finishing second in the inaugural 2022 Championship, the team rebuilt its roster heading into the 2023 season—ushering in a new era of American supremacy in the Game Changers circuit.
With a revamped lineup featuring Alexis “alexis” Guarrasi, Melanie “meL” Capone, Nicole “Noia” Tierce, Sarah “sarah” Simpson, and florescent, Shopify Rebellion swept the competition, claiming the following titles:
- Game Changers Championship 2023
- VCT Game Changers NA Series 1 (2024)
- VCT Game Changers NA Series 2 (2024)
- VCT Game Changers NA Series 3 (2024)
- Game Changers Championship 2024
- Qualification for NA Challengers League
That last achievement is particularly historic—Shopify Rebellion became the first all-female team to qualify for a Challengers league (Tier 2), a traditionally male-dominated circuit.
While 2024 was a banner year for SR Gold—pulling off a back-to-back World Championship run and a Tier 2 qualification—the team isn’t slowing down. Despite florescent’s departure at the end of 2024, SR kicked off 2025 in dominant fashion, securing the Game Changers Stage 1 title. That marked their fourth straight title in the NA GC Circuit.
