A clear roadmap
Riot Games has partially revealed its release schedule for future Riftbound sets, its trading card game (TCG) set in the League of Legends universe. In an article published on July 28, the North American publisher revealed a fast-paced cadence, with nearly four sets per year following the launch of Origins, the first set, in October 2025. This tight schedule will be paired with a rotation system for the competitive scene, the details of which were also unveiled in the same article.
Riot Games' plan for Riftbound
The first set, Origins, will kick things off on October 31, 2025 with the release of its English version. China, on the other hand, is set to receive its version starting August 1. After this initial staggered release, eight additional expansions are expected to follow throughout 2026 and 2027, with simultaneous global launches.
This approach will establish a solid foundation of nine sets available for competitive Riftbound players before the first major rotation, scheduled for early 2028. From that point onward, the TCG will move into a regular cycle where each new expansion at the start of the year will rotate out the four oldest sets from Standard play, shaking up the meta.
Riftbound release and rotation schedule (2025-2029)
- October 2025: Origins releases.
- 2025–2027: Sets 2–9 release.
- Start of 2028: Set 10 releases, first rotation occurs — Sets 1–5 removed from Standard.
- 2028: Sets 11–13 release.
- Start of 2029: Set 14 releases, second rotation occurs — Sets 6–9 removed from Standard.
The game’s entire competitive ecosystem, from regional to global tournaments, will revolve around these rotations. Riot Games’ full strategy on the subject is detailed in an article live on Sheep Esports. This approach, combined with the promise of rotating formats, demonstrates the publisher’s commitment to building a sustainable and welcoming ecosystem for new players.
