Riot plans to revamp and modernize the entire LoL tutorial
On Wednesday 13, Maddy Wojdak Marquissee, Senior Game Product Manager at Riot Games, announced on her newly created X account that her team is actively working on improving the League of Legends tutorial. According to her, the team will be running an experiment next month in which new players will be placed into Brawl before experiencing the traditional Summoner’s Rift map.
The goal is to see whether introducing beginners to a simpler, more contained game mode can help them grasp the basics more quickly and enjoyably. It is also a way for new players, as well as their potential teammates, to feel less frustrated to be trapped in a very long game, only to try out strategies and discover some champions and game mechanics.
A future rework of the entire tutorial
This experiment is only the first step. Maddy explained that the ultimate ambition is to fully rework the game’s tutorials, a part of League that has often been criticized for feeling outdated compared to the game’s evolving complexity. In response to a player’s question, she clarified that the new system will be built to be far more flexible, allowing Riot to update it more easily in line with League’s frequent additions and changes—something the current tutorial struggles to keep up with.

For context, Maddy Wojdak Marquissee is no stranger to onboarding systems. She previously led the team responsible for the Wild Rift tutorial, a guided experience praised for its clear explanations of lane roles, map objectives, and beginner-friendly champion recommendations. That experience is likely to inform Riot’s approach to making League’s notoriously steep learning curve a little less intimidating for new players.
If the Brawl-first approach proves effective, it could mark the beginning of a more modern, adaptive onboarding experience for one of the most played—and most complex—competitive games in the world.
